A Nat Geo team examined several solutions: Plant certain trees farther north to keep up with the Earth’s warming. The right trees in the right places make a huge difference. Another idea: genetically engineer tougher trees. Or, in some cases, it may be best to let a forest grow back on its own.

I walk around the pool table looking for the best chance of putting a ball in a pocket. There, that angle’s definitely doable. I align the angles in my mind’s eye to make it happen in that corner pocket, then take the shot. Drat, I can tell I hit the cue ball just off my mark. But wait a second, what just happened? My intended ball nudged another of mine and ended up in the pocket anyway! And that, my friends, is how the universe works. So, don’t give up on your objective because the possibilities are endless.
